چکیده

The asteroid belt helps us in reconstructing the origin and the evolution of the solar system, probably better than the planets themselves. This is because the asteroid belt provides several key constraints that can be used to effectively guide the development, calibration, and validation of evolutionary models. Compared to other small-body populations, such as the Kuiper belt or Oort cloud, the constraints provided by the asteroid belt are probably more stringent, due to the fact that the number and the properties of the asteroids are better known, thanks to groundbased observations, space missions, and meteorite analysis. The structure of this review chapter is therefore as follows. We start by reviewing in section 2 what the most important observational constraints on the asteroid belt are and what they suggest. Then, in section 3, we will review the main models proposed, from the oldest to the most recent, and from the earliest to the latest evolutionary phases they address. In section 4, we will discuss several implications for asteroid science from our current preferred view of the dynamical evolution of the asteroid belt. The dynamical evolution of the asteroid belt has already been the object of a review chapter by Petit et al. (2002) in the Asteroids III book. This review therefore has an important overlap with that chapter. Nevertheless, both our

The Compositional Structure of the Asteroid Belt

The past decade has brought major improvements in large-scale asteroid discovery and characterization with over half a million known asteroids and over 100,000 with some measurement of physical characterization. This explosion of data has allowed us to create a new global picture of the Main Asteroid Belt. Put in context with meteorite measurements and dynamical models, a new and more complete ...

Dynamical erosion of the asteroid belt and implications for large impacts in the inner solar system

The cumulative effects of weak resonant and secular perturbations by the major planets produce chaotic behavior of asteroids on long timescales. Dynamical chaos is the dominant loss mechanism for asteroids with diameters D & 10 km in the current asteroid belt. In a numerical analysis of the long term evolution of test particles in the main asteroid belt region, we find that the dynamical loss h...

The primordial excitation and clearing of the asteroid belt—Revisited

We have performed new simulations of two different scenarios for the excitation and depletion of the primordial asteroid belt, assuming Jupiter and Saturn on initially circular orbits as predicted by the Nice Model of the evolution of the outer Solar System [Gomes, R., Levison, H.F., Tsiganis, K., Morbidelli, A., 2005. Nature 435, 466–469; Tsiganis, K., Gomes, R., Morbidelli, A., Levison, H.F.,...

The origin and evolution of stony meteorites

The origin of stony meteorites landing on Earth today is directly linked to the history of the main belt, which evolved both through collisional evolution and dynamical evolution/depletion. In this paper, we focus our attention on the main belt dynamical evolution scenario discussed in Petit et al. (2001). According to Petit et al., during the planet formation epoch, the primordial main belt co...

Dynamical transport of asteroid fragments from the ν6 resonance

A large disruption in the main asteroid belt can cause a large flux, an “asteroid shower”, on the terrestrial planets. We quantitatively examine the hypothesis that such an event was the cause of the lunar late heavy bombardment (LHB). We performed numerical integrations of about 20000 test particles starting in the vicinity of the ν6 secular resonance in the main asteroid belt. The purpose of ...
